What To Look For in a Marketing Coach

What To Look For in a Marketing Coach or Any Coach

It would be easy to find a coach these days. They’re everywhere, no matter what you’re looking for and no matter the niche. The real question is how to discern the real dedicated coaches from those that have just made a decision to be a coach? Below I have outlined a few attributes to look for in a marketing coach or any coach.

Do they invest in themselves
If you are looking for someone to show you how to fast track your results, it’s important to know that they have come down the road you’re looking to go down. If they haven’t been on the receiving end of a coach, it may be difficult for that person to know where you are. The only true way for a coach to understand where you are, is for them to have invested financially in themselves. To know what’s on the line and to feel that sense of urgency.

This might be a no-brainer to read so, let me explain. It would be easy for a coach to float your EGO to keep you going along with the coaching program. It takes a true coach to call you out on your stories and excuses. Understand, it’s also important for you to be able to receive.
A coach will NEED to hold you accountable for all your actions and in-actions. To bring your “Why” up to show you what’s important in your life. To put you back on track when you falter. Not to tell you that you’re wrong or guilt you…To guide you back to your vision.
This comes down to working with someone that has the toughness to call you out.
It also means that you must be open to HEAR when your coach is speaking. Of course, this all must be done with tact and respect.

Thought teaching someone by simply stating what to do, is not a bad sort of style, it can make it difficult to ‘connect’ with your coach. Though your coach should be strong, vulnerability is a great quality. They should be able to share their struggles with you and how they were able to over come. There is no room for EGO in Coaching.

Personal Results
I will only tell you from personal opinion here. I believe, in order to be a coach, they must be where you want your results to be. Or at least steps ahead of where you are. I believe there are people in all industries, with a coach title, that haven’t created their own results. Find the person that has what you want, see if they coach and if they are available.

Last and just about most important, Questions. I added the exclamation point for a reason. When you are speaking with your coach, the call should be all about you! Related imageRED FLAGS always go up, if they are talking about themselves and all the accomplishments. Essentially, they are looking to prove how great they are. A good coach knows that they have to ask questions in order to serve you best.

As you can see, it’s not just picking someone that seems cool or that you have
something in common. This is serious and You can go to Heights that you may have never believed possible.

Choose your coach wisely and you’ll be the person you always dreamed of being

    Hey Steve,
Awesome tips on what to look for in a marketing coach and I agree to a great extent. I have had a mentor/coach in someone who is also a Great Spiritual person. And the advise they give is truly inspiring on the business front too. They are NOT marketers, although they are doing brilliant in the corporate arena! So that’s the only thing I can say. They don’t have to be in the marketing field Or we negate great coaches for our business life. 🙂
Its a chicken and egg situation really…What came first? Should one hold on to knowledge they know until they are multiple 6-7 figure earners? Or should one share the lessons as one grows? I am a true believer in Teaching what I know and what results I have so far, so that others can learn and half their journey too. Just my Two Pence 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
