What Is A Legacy | 10 Ways To Be Remembered

Legacy: Something handed down or received from an ancestor or predecessor. How powerful is that.

We get so bunched up in life that we start living day to day and forget about the big picture in life. Think about your mom, dad, brother, sister, grandparents, etc…What do you remember about them. That is their Legacy. Your legacy isn’t something that you want “Life” to take care of for you. You want to live a life that when you are gone, people still want to be like you.

I put together 10 ways so you can be remember for your Legacy.

Have love with your family. Sounds like this would be easy but, again life gets crazy and we tend to take our family for granted and forget to “Love” them. Take the time to hang out with your spouse and your children as much as you can. This is something your family will remember you for…you being a loving and caring person, no matter what life was doing, you Loved:

Celebrate: Develop a tradition in your family to celebrate stuff. Heck, when I get home early from work, we have a celebration. It doesn’t have to be a major event you are celebrating. Being exciting makes you awesome.

Correct a wrong. Do some inner soul searching. Everyone has something that they can improve. Socrates said it best with “the unexamined life is not worth living”. People will know you as someone always improving.

Break down those walls. Be real. Be real with your spouse, be real with your children, be real with the people around you. We tend to keep this wall up around our heart and it keeps the real us hidden. You will be more “Known” by people. If you have walls up, nobody knows the real you. Talk about your life, tell stories and talk about your past, it’s cool.

Be honorable. Your reputation and integrity are huge, it’s a part of your legacy. Remember that money isn’t everything and being famous doesn’t last forever. Never – ever put money or personal gain in front of your family or friends. This will not make you awesome.

Be a giver. Be someone that is willing to help others without the expectation of getting something in return. This is huge and a fast start builder for your Legacy. Do what you can to help people and put your heart into it. That’s awesome.

Encourage people. With all the garbage we are bombarded with today, it is easy to get worn down. Most people won’t even get a compliment all day. It’s sad when you think about it. If someone you know does something good, tell them. If they look nice, tell them. Ask yourself “What can I do to encourage someone today”?

Be passionate. Put your heart into whatever you are doing. Someone that is passionate is easy to recognize. Put your heart into your family, friends and yes, even your job.

Put off short-term gratification for long term satisfaction. This is a good lesson to teach our children. We all want the biggest TV, fastest car, coolest boat but, is it really as important as paying off the credit card bills or putting money away for the kids college education? Think about it this way, is a one-night stand worth years of a relationship. Yes, that’s strong but I think you get the point.

Lastly – Don’t live for you legacy, live for your family. All the above stuff will fall in line if you have love with and for your family. You will want all that other stuff, when you start putting your family before yourself and stuff the ego.

So, what is a legacy? It’s about kicking ass in life for your family, thinking about other before yourself and being cool to people. In my opinion.
